Cleveland State University and Bioneers Cleveland Sustainability Forum

What is Bioneers?

Founders Kenny and Nina coined the term Bioneers in 1990 to describe an emerging culture. Bioneers are social and scientific innovators from all walks of life and disciplines who have peered deep into the heart of living systems to understand how nature operates, and to mimic “nature’s operating instructions” to serve human ends without harming the web of life.

 Bioneers Cleveland

Since 2007 Bioneers Cleveland has been the premiere environmental conference showcasing how nature and human ingenuity are creating solutions to restore people and the planet. It has established itself as an important part ofNortheast Ohio’s sustainability movement by educating and inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to take action to create a more sustainable region. Another unique aspect of Bioneers Cleveland is the recognition of the importance of the arts and of spirit to sustainability, both on the personal and collective levels.

Ever think for a moment and wonder why you are doing all that stuff you are doing and why you are doing it?  What if you just stopped? Stopped doing all that running around, that this and that, that chatter here, there and everywhere, that hurry up and wait, those lists, meetings, phone calls.

Please STOP for a moment and listen….

These shoes were made for walking…

Chuck Taylor All-Stars!  Not the best choice for walking across the state but they are old school and almost free on the bargain rack at your local TJ Maxx, Marshalls or local thrift store. This is my 3rd pair and I have one more left to last me until June 12th.  Did I mention my a## is tired as H -E-double hockey sticks?

Check out this sign what is it? Wolf, German Shepard, Coyote?

I’m not sure but I am certain I do not want to meet up with it.

Folks this is a tremendous experience.  If nothing else, I hope this walk is making you think about the environment around you, bring your own bags to the grocery, find out what Fracking in Ohio means, reduce your trash, get outside and toss a frisbee, hit a Croquet Ball, play in the water, take a walk, talk to your neighbor about the environment and oh yeah “Sustainability”…what is that again?

Twelve more days of this fun filled adventure to go; I’d like to hear what you are thinking?

GREED is GOOD…and so is Plastic apparently…

“…I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms: greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.”  Gordon Gekko

That’s right folks for the top 1% of us all greed is good and it is making them rich, rich, rich while killing ALL of us at the same time.  Remember in Wall Street, the movie from which I just quoted Gordon Gekko, he bought, broke into parts and then sold Blue Star Airlines?  Are the 1%ers doing the same to USA Incorporated?

Think about it.  When was the last time you bought something made in the good ol’ US of A and/or wasn’t made of some form of plastic?

Check out this book, Plastics, A Toxic Love Story by Susan Freinkel or rent this movie, Capitalism, A Love Story by Michael Moore or this documentary, Gaslands, The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. And it’s now in Ohio.

Crude oil and natural gas are fueling Capitalism and at the expense of our natural environments.  Yesterday I asked you to go climb a tree, today I ask you to take a closer look at what is happening around you and then I ask yourself what can we do about it?

Go Climb A Tree

When’s the last time you climbed a tree or sat under a tree or even looked at a tree?  Take a minute next time you walk by a tree, stop, take a look and perhaps…go climb a tree!
